Dental Exams

We’re happy to take new dental patients, so if you’re looking for a local dentist, or if it’s just been a while since your last dental exam, give us a call at (207) 647-8052.

Regular dental exams are an important part of your healthcare routine, and our dental hygienists recommend a dental exam every six months for most of our patients.

What would a dental exam look like with Bridgton Dental Associates?
During a routine dental exam, the dentist or one of our dental hygienists will clean your teeth and look for signs of one of the following:

  • Tooth decay

  • Gum inflammation

  • Bone loss

Do you check for other mouth-related health problems?
We will evaluate your risk for developing decay and any other health problems. We don’t just look for teeth problems. As part of a screening for oral cancer, we’ll check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities.

What types of devices are typically included in a dental exam?
Dentals exams might also include X-rays or other diagnostic procedures. X-rays, which help us examine the structure of your bones and teeth, aren’t generally required at every visit. There’s very little risk with dental X-rays, but if you have concerns, please tell us about them!

What type of information will you ask me during my dental exam?
During your dental exam, we’ll also ask you some questions about your health and habits. For example, we will ask you list medications you take and whether you smoke or chew tobacco. Some diseases, such as diabetes, for example, can increase your risk of gum disease.

Do you have any information about preventing mouth-related health problems?
We might also talk with you about the consequences of tooth loss, the benefits of crowns, bridges and dental implants, and cosmetic procedures that might be appropriate for you.

Why should I get a dental exam?
Regular dental exams also are important to evaluate your need for tooth restoration or replacement, to check your bite and jaw for problems and to get refreshers on proper techniques for cleaning your teeth or dentures. Even if you don’t have your original teeth, regular dental exams are important to ensure your continuing oral health.

How will I know that I need to book a follow-up appointment?
If your dental exam indicates you need some follow-up dental health services, we will talk with you about them and schedule an appointment for another time.
